Assets minus liabilities

Net worth = total assets − total liabilities

Assets are things you own that have a money value: cash, savings, investment and retirement accounts, and what your home or car would realistically sell for today, not what you paid. Liabilities are every balance you owe: mortgage, car and student loans, credit cards, money borrowed from family. Use the current balance from each statement.

The result can be negative, for example while a large student loan is being repaid; it then shows in brackets, the way ledgers mark a deficit. The debt-to-asset ratio divides liabilities by assets: 64% means you owe 64 cents for every dollar you own.

Net worth matters most as a trend. Press "Record snapshot" every month or quarter: each snapshot keeps that day's totals, the change column shows the movement since the previous one, and from two snapshots on a chart appears. Recording twice on one date replaces the earlier figure. The Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances measures household net worth the same way, as assets minus debts.

Questions

Should I include my home?

Including the home and its mortgage shows your equity in it. Some people also look at a figure without the home, because a home is hard to turn into cash; note the two values, remove those lines to see that version, then add them back.

Should retirement accounts be before or after tax?

Either works if you stay consistent. The statement balance is simplest; some people reduce it by the tax they expect to pay on withdrawal. Pick one approach so snapshots compare like with like.

Where are my figures and snapshots kept?

Only in this browser's local storage, under the key cedarledger-networth. Nothing is uploaded. "Clear all" deletes them; the CSV download includes the history.
